Questioning Scripture?
I want to share an excerpt from a Book I have been reading through.
The aim, as in all theological and biblical exploration, is not to replace love with knowledge. Rather, it is to keep love focused upon its true object. We must not make the overwhelming experience of God’s love revealed in the cross of Jesus an excuse for mere muddle. As in a marriage, love doesn’t stand still… It isn’t only faith that seeks understanding. Love ought to do the same; not of course to stop loving, but so that love may grow, mature, and bear fruit. -N.T. Wright, The Day the Revolution Began
When I started working on my master’s degree in ministry several years ago (I am working through it slowly), I remember being very skeptical. The first course I took was Hermeneutics, which simply was the questioning and study of scripture. I remember thinking, “Why should we question scripture? Can we not just read and believe?”, But as I dove deeper into scripture my love and trust in God and his word have only grown deeper. I still have a long way to go in my love and understanding. The truth is that God’s word is so simple anyone can read and understand, but also so complicated that scholars have debated for millennia about its meaning. I never want to overcomplicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but I encourage you to spend time in God’s word and continually grow in your knowledge and love of Him.
“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law, he meditates day and night” Psalm 1:1-2
