We are Not Alone!

This past week I had to dig through some old files at the Bible Chair. As I was looking I came across a letter that was sent from the Church of Christ in San Angelo. I am not certain who wrote the letter as the only credit given was to the Elders, Ministers, and Deacons. Best I can tell this letter was likely sent in the Mid 1950s. This letter includes a description of what a Bible Chair is and how one should operate. What stuck out to me the most was a quote from Roy Osborne who I have been told was a well know Minister in Churches of Christ around the country. Below is the quote,

“It doesn’t take a Hitler youth movement or communist brainwashing to enslave the mind. A mind can become enslaved by being starved for the Truth of God while being gorged on the facts and theories of this present world. Thousands of boys and girls are lost to the church each year in this way. Most colleges teach theories of men which undermine faith in God. In the sophisticated air of a modern university ofttimes spiritual truths have little place. Our young people have more information than any generation before them, but without a knowledge of God the knowledge they have becomes a power to enslave and destroy them.” – Roy Osborne

Had I not told you this was likely written in the mid-1950s one could argue that this was written yesterday. Although it would be easy to be discouraged by these words, or by the fact we are still facing the same problems, I choose to, instead, be encouraged that we are not alone. Ofttimes it is easy to be discouraged by the way of the world, but to know that there have been faithful men and women for years, decades, centuries, millennia that have been fighting the good fight, and striving to bring for the Truth of God, on university campuses around the country is refreshing. In our world, today, with so many opportunities to connect it is all too easy to be disconnected from one another and to feel alone in the fight. We must remember that we are not alone, and more importantly, that the Lord is at work.
